Cotswold Cottage

Perched on the side of a valley in the Cotswolds, the owners of this cottage yearned to maximise their views, fill their dark 16th century cottage with light and open up the cramped living spaces. After their initial consultation, the concept developed to use floor to ceiling panels of glass to frame the countryside beyond and to bring further natural light into the heart of their cottage using a wide profile skylight.

Two small, dark rooms were combined and extended, whilst being sympathetic to the aesthetic of the stone cottage exterior and holding on to the charm of the property. The newly constructed space houses a Devol kitchen, a dining space flooded with natural light, a soft seating snug and numerous bespoke storage solutions. The countryside views stream in through the floor to ceiling glazing, whilst the well considered kitchen layout makes daily life a pleasure.

The landscaping element of this project allowed us to create a flush transition, with triple sliding doors opening the space up completely to outside, taking a once unusable sloping lawn and turning it into a fantastic sun terrace that flows seamlessly into their home. This area was landscaped with Cotswold stone walled borders, raised beds, paving, and generous steps to a lower lawn.

The property is situated in an ‘area of outstanding natural beauty’ whilst also being in a conservation area, we worked alongside the architect and clients to support moving the project past a tricky developmental stage and successfully through the planning process.

The cottage was originally built with extraordinarily thick walls unusually requiring an 18 piece steel frame to support the removal of internal walls. The experienced Cotswold Design team were able to take on the many challenges and quirks of working on such an old property, discussing changes with our clients and successfully implementing solutions as they arose.
